The Mu­nich Mi­cro­moun­ters and their Lithothek„What will be the fate of my collection once I will no longer be able to collect? There are specimens of unique beauty and extreme rarity in the collection, pieces that cannot be replaced since some localities are closed or have been obliterated. All this might be thrown away because not many people realise the value and importance hidden in these little unimpressive boxes”. Many micromounters are worried by these considerations and other factors. “My collection is an important part of my life and of my personality. If my collection dissapears, I too, will cease to exist without trace”. We, the Micromounters of the Münchener Mineralienfreunde, are no exception. Many times the future of our collections was subject of our discussions and conversations. Children and grand children are not always appreciative of their parents’ or grandparents’ passion.

Kün­stliche Kris­talle - SpinellSpinellsynthesen finden sich im Handel als komplette Schmelzbirnen, die ab und an einen annähernd quadratischen, aber abgerundeten Querschnitt besitzen. In der Nähe des Keimes finden sich selten abgerundete Oktaederflächen.

Im Gegensatz dazu sind Korundbirnen in der Regel der Länge nach gespalten, um die inneren Spannungen im Kristall zu lösen. Ge­o­log­ic Por­trait - Weather­ing and Ero­sionWeathering is a continous process by which rocks are broken down and decomposed by the action of humidity (rain), wind, temperature changes, chemical agents, bacteria and plants. Being an integral part of the rocks cycle, weathering is the initial stage towards denudation, which results in general lowering of the land surface. An essential feature is that it affects rocks in situ; no transportation is involved. This is the factor which dsitinguishes weathering from erosion. The two main types of weathering are mechanical and chemical. Climate plays a leading role in weathering, whereas chemical weathering is almost absent in arid regions. Effecrtive freeze-thaw cycles are confined to cold temperate and permafrost climates.

Erosion is part of the process of denudation which involves the wearing away of land surface by mechanical action of transported debris. Main cycles of erosion are glaciers, wind erosion, marine erosion.

Ge­o­log­ic and min­er­a­log­i­cal ex­pe­di­tion through Namibia and the Na­maqua­landReport about a geologic - and geology of deposits excursion through central and southern Namibia as well as the Namaqualand bordering to the South and parts of the Northern cape in autumn, 2009., Amongst other localities in Namibia the author visited the tin deposit Uis, the explorations project Namib Lead near Swakopmund, as well as the important mines Rosh Pinah and Scorpion Zinc in the south of Namibia. In the Republic South Africa the trip led to the copper mining region of Okiep as well as the lead zinc mines of Aggeneys and, finally, to the Kalahari manganese ore districts of Postmasburg and Kuruman.

Pet­ri­fied For­est Na­tio­n­al ParkThe Petrified Forest is primarily a geological park, which owes its origin to the climate and geological events. It is part of the so-called Painted Desert and shows with its various layers a strange and impressive scenery. Characterized by erosion, it is a treasure trove of fossils. The rock formations show a chronicle of the past and give clues about the events of bygone days. In the park you can exposure rock strata until 234 million years ago. The colorful desert hills, the flat mesas and shaped hills attributable primarily to Chinle Formation and are fluvial sediments, caused by water movement. Countless fossilized wood and tree trunks bear witness to a scrumptious earlier fauna.
