Basaltsäulen sind erkaltete und erstarrte basaltische Lava. Die Erscheinungsform dieser erkalteten basaltischen Lava ist hauptsächlich von zwei Faktoren abhängig. Eruptierte Lava kühlt recht schnell aus zu einem zusammenhängenden Gesteinsgefüge, das je nach Temperatur und Gasgehalt als Pahoehoe-Lava oder als Aa-Lava erstarrt.
