ZincIin 1546 Georgius Agricola reported about a white metal which is fused to the Rammelsberg lead and silver melter and that you could scrape off. He called this metal "contrefey", because it could imitate gold. Agricola did not recognize that this metal was zinc. He further observed that a similar metal, which he named from some unknown reasons "ZINCUM" arose under similar circumstances in Silesia during smelting.

Ge­o­log­i­cal Por­trait - The AlpsThe Alps are the highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe, stretching approximately 1,200 km across eight Alpine countries from Austria and Slovenia in the east, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, and France to the west, and Italy and Monaco to the south. The Caucasus Mountains are higher, and the Urals longer, but both lie partly in Asia. The Alps were formed over tens of millions of years as the African and Eurasian tectonic plates collided. Extreme shortening caused by the event resulted in marine sedimentary rocks rising by thrusting and folding into high mountain peaks such as Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn. Mont Blanc spans the French–Italian border, and at 4,810 m is the highest mountain in the Alps. The Alpine region area contains about a hundred peaks higher than 4,000 m known as the "four-thousanders".

Berg­bau am Kien­berg (Rausch­berg, Rauschen­berg)Das Gebiet um Ruhpolding und Inzell ist heutzutage ein geradezu idyllischer Fleck, das als Ferienregion Wanderern, Gleitschirmfliegern, Skifahrern und Langläufern zahlreiche Möglichkeiten bietet, ihrem Hobby nachzugehen. Durch die großen Wintersportereignisse - Eisschnelllauf in Inzell, Biathlon in Ruhpolding -, aber auch durch das Skigebiet Winkelmoosalm - von Ruhpolding kommend auf dem Weg zum Parkplatz Seegatterl fährt man am Rauschberg vorbei - haben die östlichen Chiemgauer Alpen einen überregionalen Bekanntheitsgrad gewonnen.

Dabei hat diese Ecke der Alpen auch eine ganz andere Tradition. Über Jahrhunderte - grob von der Mitte des 16. Jh. bis in die Anfänge des 20. Jh. - wurde hier Bergbau betrieben, und das Metall auch weiterverarbeitet. Stack­ing­s­teuerung für Makroauf­nah­men - Selb­st­bauan­lei­tungGute Makroaufnahmen von winzigen Mineralien lassen sich meist nur über digitale Mehrebenenfotografie erreichen. Mehrere Bilder werden übereinander gelegt und die besten Stellen aus den Bildern zusammen gerechnet. Hierzu wird ein Bilderstabel (Stack) in unterschiedlichen, winzigen Abständen vom Objekt (Mineral) aufgenommen. Da es sehr schwierig und zeitaufwändig ist winzigen Abstände mit der Hand einzustellen, gibt es Geräte die dies automatisiert erledigen. Das Objekt oder die Kamera wird in winzigen Schritten entfernt oder heran geführt und jeweils ein Bild ausgelöst. Eine Stacking-Software wie Helicon-Focus oder CombineZM übernimmt später das Zusammenrechnen der Bilder. Diese Anleitung soll einen kostengünstigen Zugang zu dieser Technik ermöglichen.

The Ts­in­gys of Mada­gas­carOne of Madagascar's geological specialties are the so-called Tsingy: bizarre, at first sight hostile Karst landscapes, though form, due to the inaccessibility, a refugial area for some species. The word Tsingy means "walking one tip-toes" or "where one cannot walk bare-foot" in Malagasy language, an accurate description for the partially razor-sharp rock formations which can reach 20 m in height and with ends which can be as thin as pencils.

Best known and most impressive are the Tsingy of Bemaraha in the West of the island and the Tsingy of Ankarana in the North, both widespread Karst areas. In the North, as well, about 10 km south of the city of Antsiranana, one can find the Red Tsingy which have been washed out of the lateritic layer of earth.
