Min­er­al Por­trait PyriteThe term used in the plural "pyrites" has often been misused in the past or in common for marcasite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and other yellow to brass-colored minerals. The word pyrite is derived from the Greek "pyrites lithos" (derived pyr = fire and lithos = stone) and describes a characteristic of the mineral, when rubbing against steel or flint (flint) to generate sparks. In prehistoric tombs pyrite concretions and unrolled pyrite where found, which supposed to be used for lighting a fire. (Article in German)

How long people processed galena as main ore for the production of lead is unknown. As lead inter alia used as an additive to various melts (e.g. to bronze and the salt-cementation process for gold extraction) one can assume that the properties of this mineral were known before 3000 BC. Other sources speak of a history of lead about 7000-9000 years BC back.

Grand Cany­onDer Grand Canyon ist eine stark abfallende Schlucht die sich auf einer Länge von 450 km im Bundestaat Arizon der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika erstreckt. Der Grand Canyon ist einer der best erforschten Aufschlüsse, dennoch sind die Entstehung und die dafür benötigten Zeiträume nicht vollends geklärt. In der Zweitspann von 65 bis 20 Millionen Jahren (Ma) wurde das Kaibab Plateau an dessem südwestlichem Rand der Grand Canyon liegt auf bis zu 3000m über den Meeresspeigel angehoben. Nach einer Phase der Erosion in der nahezu vollständig die im Mesozoikum abgelagerten Sedimente weg erodierten begann der Ur-Colorade sich durch die verbliebenen Schichten zu graben. Nach heutigem Stand benötigte der Colorado wenige Millionen Jahre um den heutigen Grand Canyon freizulegen. Die Erosion in die Tiefe erfolgte dabei in den letzten 2 Ma.

The "Eisen­ham­mer" (iron ham­mer) to He­im­buchen­thal The former "Eisenhammer" (iron hammer) to Heimbuchenthal has to show a very interesting history. The hammer mill established at the beginning of the 18th century reached at the end of the 18th century in the possession of the family Rexroth under whose guidance the company came to the full blossom. The squires showed a high social engagement which was reflected in the reimbursement of the workers, but also in the enlargement of the entrance ways. In specially constructed schools up to 30 children were teaches on the hammer mill property. On one, from oaks surrounded cemetery the late squires and their members were buried. In 1891 the company was discontinued and the hammer mill was converted into a court estate. From the industrial monument all buildings except the great smithy are even today in a very good state.

Special chapters deal with the fluorite deposits and global settings, the mining of fluorspar and ore processing; One chapter shows the development of fluorite collecting in the past and now.

The most comprehensive part of the book is dedicated to the mineral's worldwide deposits, describing the best known old, classic and modern occurrences in 96 countries . A great number of mineral and mining photographs accompany each chapter, showing the characteristics of most fluorites from a specific deposit.
