Ge­o­log­ic Por­trait - Weather­ing and Ero­sionWeathering is a continous process by which rocks are broken down and decomposed by the action of humidity (rain), wind, temperature changes, chemical agents, bacteria and plants. Being an integral part of the rocks cycle, weathering is the initial stage towards denudation, which results in general lowering of the land surface. An essential feature is that it affects rocks in situ; no transportation is involved. This is the factor which dsitinguishes weathering from erosion. The two main types of weathering are mechanical and chemical. Climate plays a leading role in weathering, whereas chemical weathering is almost absent in arid regions. Effecrtive freeze-thaw cycles are confined to cold temperate and permafrost climates.

Erosion is part of the process of denudation which involves the wearing away of land surface by mechanical action of transported debris. Main cycles of erosion are glaciers, wind erosion, marine erosion.

St. An­dreas­berg im HarzDas sogenannte Silbererzrevier von St. Andreasberg ist eine schmale, nach Westen keilförmig auslaufende Fläche. Diese ist ungefähr 6 km lang und 1 km breit. Sie liegt dicht am südlichen Rand des Brockengranites.

Es wurden in diesem Revier etwa 18 erzführende Gänge und 6 bis 8 taube "Ruscheln" im Laufe der Betriebszeit erschlossen und mehr oder weniger intensiv abgebaut. Auserhalb dieses "Silberdreieckes" sind noch andere Erzgänge bekannt, die jedoch eine andere Mineralführung aufweisen: Eisenspat, Schwerspat und nur geringe Mengen von Pb-, Zn- und Cu-Sulfiden.

Dev­il's Pul­pitActually, this is a picturesque place in a well-kept forest. Nevertheless, in the past, evil itself is said to have preached to the damned here from a large, solitary, towering rock spur. Today, the term Devil's Pulpit inspires one to play with associations, as do the drawings of agates found here. Their fantastic outlines, coupled with the unusual shape of the secondary rock, evoke images in the viewer that he would not have suspected in a stone. And on the devil's pulpit no longer an evil demon is waiting for the agate collector, but other executive powers threatening with purgatory... a contribution by Klaus Schäfer and others (in german)

Special chapters deal with the fluorite deposits and global settings, the mining of fluorspar and ore processing; One chapter shows the development of fluorite collecting in the past and now.

The most comprehensive part of the book is dedicated to the mineral's worldwide deposits, describing the best known old, classic and modern occurrences in 96 countries . A great number of mineral and mining photographs accompany each chapter, showing the characteristics of most fluorites from a specific deposit.

Min­er­alien­por­trait GoethitAuf den ersten Blick erscheint es ungewöhnlich, gleichzeitig etwas über ein anerkanntes Mineral wie Goethit und über seine berühmten, jedoch nicht als Mineralspezies akzeptierten Abkömmlinge Limonit, Ocker und Raseneisenerz, sowie einige seltenere Varianten der limonitischen Familie, ja selbst über Gesteine zu lesen. Auf den zweiten Blick erkennt man jedoch, dass in diesem Portrait der Versuch unternommen wird, einmal der Tradition der bekannten Lehrbücher zu folgen, welche Goethit und Limonit wegen ihrer Verwandschaft zumeist gemeinsam betrachten, andererseits dem Mineraliensammler entgegenzukommen, für welchen Limonit - ob Gemisch, Gemenge oder Gestein - seit eh und je zu den eigenständigen Mineralien zählt... Min­er­alien­por­trait JaspisJaspis ist eine mikrokristalline, feinkörnige Varietät des Minerals Quarz und gehört wie dieses zur Mineralklasse der Oxide mit einem Stoffmengenverhältnis mit Metall: Sauerstoff = 1:2. Es ist eng verwandt mit dem stets faserig aufgebauten Chalcedon. Die Verwandtschaft ist so eng, dass sogar Stücke vorkommen, bei denen körnig und faserig aufgebaute Quarzmaterialien miteinander verwachsen sind. Jaspis ist nur sehr selten in reiner Form zu finden. Durch Verwachsungen mit Achat und Opal, aber auch durch Fremdbeimengungen von bis zu 20 % wie Tonerde, Eisenoxid, Eisenhydroxid und Manganhydroxid schwanken seine chemischen und physikalischen Eigenschaften sehr stark.
