The Ts­in­gys of Mada­gas­carOne of Madagascar's geological specialties are the so-called Tsingy: bizarre, at first sight hostile Karst landscapes, though form, due to the inaccessibility, a refugial area for some species. The word Tsingy means "walking one tip-toes" or "where one cannot walk bare-foot" in Malagasy language, an accurate description for the partially razor-sharp rock formations which can reach 20 m in height and with ends which can be as thin as pencils.

Best known and most impressive are the Tsingy of Bemaraha in the West of the island and the Tsingy of Ankarana in the North, both widespread Karst areas. In the North, as well, about 10 km south of the city of Antsiranana, one can find the Red Tsingy which have been washed out of the lateritic layer of earth.

Dublet­ten und Tri­plet­tenAls Dubletten oder Tripletten bezeichnet man senkrecht zur Ansicht verklebte Steine, die aus zwei (Dubletten) oder drei verklebten Schichten (Tripletten) bestehen. Konstrukte mit mehr als drei Bestandteilen haben keinen anderen Namen. Mosaike sind mehrteilig, aber auch parallel der Blickrichtung zusammengefügt. Eine weitere Sonderform sind Soudé (Soudée) -Steine, die mit Glas verschmolzen, also nicht verklebt werden. Diesen Steinen ähnlich sind mit blauem Glas überzogene, natürliche Lapis-Lazuli-Stücke. Blickt man auf die Glasfläche hat man einen intensiven Farbeindruck, bei dem sich die Struktur des unteren, natürlichen Teiles ebenfalls wiedergegeben findet. Gefasste Dubletten, Triplette und die hier erwähnten Sonderformen lassen sich nur schwer im Schmuckstück erkennen. Hat man die Stücke lose vor sich genügt oft ein Blick auf die Seite der Steine, um ihre Komposition zu offenbaren.

Ojuela MineEntdeckt wurde die Lagerstätte durch die Spanier bereits 1598. Bekanntheit in der Fachwelt erlangte sie allerdings erst 1927, nachdem der amerikanische Mineraloge W.F. Foshags die Mine besuchte und darüber schrieb. Einige Spuren weisen aber darauf hin, dass bereits vor der Eroberung durch die Spanier Bergbau von einheimischen Völkern betrieben wurde.

Die Arbeitsbedingungen in den Gruben waren unter spanischer Führung hart, sodass der Bergbau erheblich zur Entvölkerung der eingeborenen Völker beigetragen hatte. Bergleute mussten Lasten von bis zu 200 Pfund in Lederbeuteln entlang der Schluchtwände transportieren. Noch heute sieht man die eigens dazu in den Fels gehauenen Trittmulden. Eine Zahnradbahn, die später diese Aufgabe übernahm, musste einen Steigung von 14 % überwinden.

Pet­ri­fied For­est Na­tio­n­al ParkThe Petrified Forest is primarily a geological park, which owes its origin to the climate and geological events. It is part of the so-called Painted Desert and shows with its various layers a strange and impressive scenery. Characterized by erosion, it is a treasure trove of fossils.
