Al­ten­berg Tin MineThe Altenberg tin mine is well known for its huge surface break left by the mining activities. Among mineral collectors the mine is famous as well for its unique Pycnite deposit, a variety of topaz occurring in massive columnar aggregates up to a length of 30 cm.

The mining started in 1440 and continued, with several ups and downs and some total shut-down periods, until 1991. The mining activities aimed for a plutonic granite body (350 to 400 metre in diameter and hydrothermally mineralized mainly with cassiterite and smaller amounts of wolframite, molybdenite, arsenopyrite, bismuth and others) and managed to extract a total sum of 37 million tons of ore. The huge surface break, called "The Altenberger Pinge", is the result of several roof collapses caused by excessive ore excavation and later on the continued drawing of caved material from the bottom of the fracture zone.

Collectible minerals were rare and small, so the Altenberg tin mine became never as famous as the Freiberg or Ehrenfriedersdorf districts, but its unique geology and mining technology made it quite interesting and worth a closer look.

Min­er­al Days in Mu­nich 2012 or „The Mu­nich Show“For the 49th year once again the Munich Mineral Show was held. A few years ago under the old leadership the motto almost entirely stood under the theme of minerals and fossils. This year not only the name seems to change away from the "Munich Mineral Show" changing to "The Munich Show". The new exhibition management, led by the young Mr. Keilmann seems not quite knowing where to go or has something bigger in mind. One can imagine something in "Munich Mineral Days", it is difficult in the name "The Munich Show". Pet­ri­fied For­est Na­tio­n­al ParkThe Petrified Forest is primarily a geological park, which owes its origin to the climate and geological events. It is part of the so-called Painted Desert and shows with its various layers a strange and impressive scenery. Characterized by erosion, it is a treasure trove of fossils. The rock formations show a chronicle of the past and give clues about the events of bygone days. In the park you can exposure rock strata until 234 million years ago. The colorful desert hills, the flat mesas and shaped hills attributable primarily to Chinle Formation and are fluvial sediments, caused by water movement. Countless fossilized wood and tree trunks bear witness to a scrumptious earlier fauna.

Dev­il's Pul­pitActually, this is a picturesque place in a well-kept forest. Nevertheless, in the past, evil itself is said to have preached to the damned here from a large, solitary, towering rock spur. Today, the term Devil's Pulpit inspires one to play with associations, as do the drawings of agates found here. Their fantastic outlines, coupled with the unusual shape of the secondary rock, evoke images in the viewer that he would not have suspected in a stone. And on the devil's pulpit no longer an evil demon is waiting for the agate collector, but other executive powers threatening with purgatory... a contribution by Klaus Schäfer and others (in german)

Grube Ro­land... Die Lagerung ist sehr gestört und uneinheitlich. Der Hauptgang ist vom Schacht nach Westen zu gespalten in zwei Parallelgänge, den nördlichen "Arnold-Gang" und den südlichen "Glückauf-Gang", nach circa 200 m treffen sich beide Gänge in einer Scharungszone (Trümmerzone) wieder. Auf der 52 m Sohle wird nach Osten hin ein 3 bis 4 m breiter Gang erwähnt. Die Gangfüllung, soweit man noch im eigentlichen Sinne von einem regelmäßigen Gang sprechen kann, ist so angeordnet, daß in einem verkitteten Haufwerk von +/- veränderten Graniteinschlüssen (z.T. weiss gebleicht in Salbandregion - kaolinisiert - oder grünlich verschmiert - nontronitisiert -) der Stinkspat in +/- großen Adern, Zonen und Häufungen angereichert ... Die Sockel, die sich üblicherweise auf dem Markt befinden (Mineralienbörsen oder div. Zubehörgeschäfte im Internet), sind praktisch immer aus Plexiglas hergestellt. Die Preise variieren von Anbieter zu Anbieter.

In der folgenden Anleitung soll gezeigt werden, dass man aus geschnittenen Rohlingen mit einfachen Mitteln solche Sockel selbst hergestellt werden können.

Perl­proben... Man glüht in der rauschenden Flamme eines Bunsenbrenners ein Magnesiastäbchen bis zur Rotglut aus. Mit dem heißen Magnesiastäbchen wird eine kleine Menge Borax oder Phosphorsalz aufgenommen und vorsichtig in die Brennerflamme gebracht. Unter ständigen Drehen wird das Salz so lange in der Brennerflamme gedreht, bis eine klare Perle entstanden ist.
