Min­er­al Por­trait - REE - Rare Earth El­e­mentsThis is the most comprehensive synopsis related to the history, the mineralogy, the exploitation and the most actual economic and political resumé on rare earth elements and their minerals to be found in the internet. REE belong to the most important raw materials of the 21st century, which are used in a large number of key technologies. However, due to the fact that almost 97% of the world's REE are mined and produced in China, REE have become an ongoing political issue, mainly amongst technology providing countries like the US, Japan and Western Europe.

Pet­ri­fied For­est Na­tio­n­al ParkThe Petrified Forest is primarily a geological park, which owes its origin to the climate and geological events. It is part of the so-called Painted Desert and shows with its various layers a strange and impressive scenery. Characterized by erosion, it is a treasure trove of fossils. The rock formations show a chronicle of the past and give clues about the events of bygone days. In the park you can exposure rock strata until 234 million years ago. The colorful desert hills, the flat mesas and shaped hills attributable primarily to Chinle Formation and are fluvial sediments, caused by water movement. Countless fossilized wood and tree trunks bear witness to a scrumptious earlier fauna.

How long people processed galena as main ore for the production of lead is unknown. As lead inter alia used as an additive to various melts (e.g. to bronze and the salt-cementation process for gold extraction) one can assume that the properties of this mineral were known before 3000 BC. Other sources speak of a history of lead about 7000-9000 years BC back.

Min­er­alien­por­trait Ti­tanitTitanit ist ein Mineral, welches man in Vorkommen unterschiedlicher Genese antrifft. In Granitpegmatiten können Kristalle bis 25 cm groß werden; in Alkaligesteinen bis zu 6 cm. Kristalle von erstklassiger Qualität (relativ auch Edelsteinqualität) findet man jedoch nur in alpinotypen Klüften. Erstmals gefunden wurde Titanit 1795 in den Hauzenberger Graphitgruben im Bayerischen Wald und beschrieben durch Martin Heinrich KLAPROTH, der das Mineral nach seinem Gehalt an Titan benannte. Soweit nachvollziehbar, führte KLAPROTH die Erz-Analysen im Auftrag eines Bergbauunternehmens durch.

Mag­ne­sitw­erk - Hoch­filzen1908 Entdeckung der Magnesitlagerstätte auf der Millstätter Alpe in Kärnten durch den Bergbauingenieur Josef Hörhager. Der Deutsch-Amerikaner Emil Winter erwirbt die Schürfrechte und gründet die Austro-American Magnesite Group, die in Radenthein mit der Errichtung eines beachtlichen Magnesitwerkes begann.
1925 wurden die Magnesit-Lagerstätten am Weißenstein und der Rettenwand bei Hochfilzen in Tirol entdeckt.
1928 sicherte sich die Austro-American Magnesite Group die Abbaurechte dafür und fusionierte mit der Allgemeinen Automobil G.m.b.H. in Wien zur Austro-American Magnesite Company. Im gleichen Jahr wurde mit dem Abbau im Untertagebetrieb begonnen.

Emeralds, aquamarines, heliodors and morganites were and are used for the manufacture of jewelry because of their beauty. The common beryl is the main source of the metal beryllium; 80 % of beryllium ore is mined in the United States. The largest known crystal reached a length of 18 m.
