Min­er­al por­trait Baryt (in ger­man)In the late Middle Ages massive amount of Baryt which phosphoresced when it was gently heated, were discovered in Italy. This stone was named after its place of discovery "Pietra fosforica di Bologna" (phosphorescent Bologna stone) and was of great interest to alchemists. Although the name baryte has been assigned centuries later, it may be assumed that the Bologna stone is the first description in the literature. A portrait about this famous mineral by Peter Seroka.

Stein­bruch Kar­ren­bergDie Bildung der Achate am Karrenberg ist äußerst komplex und hochinteressant. Erkennbar wird dies zum einen an der Abfolge der Mineralisationen im Mandelbereich. In der direkten Umgebung der größeren Mandeln kann man mit viel Glück einen kleinen Graphiteinschluss ausma ein Beitarg von u.a. Klaus Schäfer chen, der von einigen Sammlern durch angenommene Bildung von Kohlenstoffgasen als mitverantwortlich für die Hohlraumbildung angesehen wird. The Ts­in­gys of Mada­gas­carOne of Madagascar's geological specialties are the so-called Tsingy: bizarre, at first sight hostile Karst landscapes, though form, due to the inaccessibility, a refugial area for some species. The word Tsingy means "walking one tip-toes" or "where one cannot walk bare-foot" in Malagasy language, an accurate description for the partially razor-sharp rock formations which can reach 20 m in height and with ends which can be as thin as pencils.

Best known and most impressive are the Tsingy of Bemaraha in the West of the island and the Tsingy of Ankarana in the North, both widespread Karst areas. In the North, as well, about 10 km south of the city of Antsiranana, one can find the Red Tsingy which have been washed out of the lateritic layer of earth.
