Min­er­alien­por­trait JaspisJaspis ist eine mikrokristalline, feinkörnige Varietät des Minerals Quarz und gehört wie dieses zur Mineralklasse der Oxide mit einem Stoffmengenverhältnis mit Metall: Sauerstoff = 1:2. Es ist eng verwandt mit dem stets faserig aufgebauten Chalcedon. Die Verwandtschaft ist so eng, dass sogar Stücke vorkommen, bei denen körnig und faserig aufgebaute Quarzmaterialien miteinander verwachsen sind. Jaspis ist nur sehr selten in reiner Form zu finden. Durch Verwachsungen mit Achat und Opal, aber auch durch Fremdbeimengungen von bis zu 20 % wie Tonerde, Eisenoxid, Eisenhydroxid und Manganhydroxid schwanken seine chemischen und physikalischen Eigenschaften sehr stark. Da die Menge und Verteilung dieser Beimengungen über das Erscheinungsbild entscheiden, ist der Farb- und Varietätenspielraum des Jaspis außerordentlich groß.... Ein Beitrag von Peter Seroka

Min­er­al por­trait olivine (ger­man)Olivine is not a separate mineral, but a member belonging to the forsterite-fayalite mixing series. Olivine belongs to the olivin-groupe whose end-members are calcio-olivine and tephroite. Forsterite is a magnesium silicate; fayalite an iron silicate. If commonly is spoken of olivine, it is usually a more or less iron-rich forsterite. The color of olivine is generally yellowish green, olive green to black. The min­ing area Marien­berg in the Erzge­birge Re­gionAfter the discovery of silver deposits in Christiansdorf - the now called Freiberg - over the time the mining was also expanded on the upper mountain. Thus from about 1240, the tin deposits (with the beginnings of subsurface mining also silver) around Ehrenfriedersdorf was mined. By finding rich silver adits in the 2nd third of the 15th Century the great mountain towns like Schneeberg (municipal law since 1477) and Annaberg (municipal law since 1496) was founded. Pet­ri­fied For­est Na­tio­n­al ParkThe Petrified Forest is primarily a geological park, which owes its origin to the climate and geological events. It is part of the so-called Painted Desert and shows with its various layers a strange and impressive scenery. Characterized by erosion, it is a treasure trove of fossils. The rock formations show a chronicle of the past and give clues about the events of bygone days. In the park you can exposure rock strata until 234 million years ago. The colorful desert hills, the flat mesas and shaped hills attributable primarily to Chinle Formation and are fluvial sediments, caused by water movement. Countless fossilized wood and tree trunks bear witness to a scrumptious earlier fauna.
