Dev­il's Pul­pitActually, this is a picturesque place in a well-kept forest. Nevertheless, in the past, evil itself is said to have preached to the damned here from a large, solitary, towering rock spur. Today, the term Devil's Pulpit inspires one to play with associations, as do the drawings of agates found here. Their fantastic outlines, coupled with the unusual shape of the secondary rock, evoke images in the viewer that he would not have suspected in a stone. And on the devil's pulpit no longer an evil demon is waiting for the agate collector, but other executive powers threatening with purgatory... a contribution by Klaus Schäfer and others (in german)

Min­er­al por­trait gar­netThis portrait mainly deals with the 6 classic garnets, their amazing history, the world’s best known classic and modern localities and deposits and their use as a gems or abrasives. It also deals with the common belief related to the non-existence of blue garnets and its refutation proven by new finds. A separate chapter deals with synthetic garnets. But it also deals with the mix up of definitions, groupings and old and unnecessary terms, which have finally been terminated or brought to a common denominator.

In 2012 the IMA (CNMNC) has defined garnets as members of the Garnet Supergroup, which include all minerals isostructural with garnet regardless of what elements occupy the four atomic sites; i.e. the supergroup includes several chemical classes . Those minerals are closely related to each other and may form a series with each other. Some garnets form intermediary minerals between each member, and may even be intergrown within a single crystal.

With the publication of the new nomenclature of the garnet supergroup, the term “garnet group” does not have its meaning anymore and the intermediate working term “Garnet superstructural group” has been replaced by “Garnet Supergroup”.
There are 32 approved species and 5 “candidate” species waiting on approval. The 32 species are subdivided by their Z-charge into 29 species, which belong to 5 groups and to 3 single representative species.
One of those 5 groups is the “Garnet group”, consisting of the 6 former (classic) garnets Pyrope, Grossular, Spessartine, Almandine, Uvarovite and Andradite plus 8 rarer garnets , as Menzerite-(Y), Eringaite, Goldmanite, Momoiite, Knorringite, Calderite, Majorite and Morimotoite.

Daop­ing Mine... Das seit 1958 blei- und zinkerzfördernde Bergwerk Daoping ist unter Sammlern durch hervorragende, wenn nicht sogar weltbeste Pyromorphitstufen bekannt geworden. Die am Haiyang-Shan-Berg gelegene Mine wurde 2003 mit der nahgelegenen Yangshuo Mine unterirdisch verbunden. Während die Daoping Mine im Bezirk Gongcheng liegt, ist die Yangshuo-Grube Teil des Yangshuo-Bezirkes. Beide Gruben bauen denselben Erzkörper ab. Chang­sha 2013 Min­er­al & Gem Show Messe­berichtDie schon lange angekündigte Show war für mich fast ein Muss, nachdem ich mich nun schon 7 Jahre in China aufhalte und die chinesische Einstellung, sich zu präsentieren, einigermaßen kenne. Alleine die Ankündigung, den anderen Shows in Tucson, München oder St. Marie irgendwann den Rang abzulaufen, ließ einiges erwarten. Immerhin war die Rede von 1000 bis 1200 Ausstellern und erwarteten 200.000 Besuchern. Nun ja, Zahlen sind in China immer mit Vorsicht zu betrachten, wie sich weiter unten noch zeigen wird.
Jedenfalls war das Medieninteresse sehr groß (es handelte sich ja schließlich um eine nationale Angelegenheit) und auch die öffentliche Werbung war bestens organisiert. Schon bei meiner Ankunft am neuen Südbahnhof von Changsha konnte man Videos zur Show betrachten, auf der Fahrt in die Stadt und dann speziell zur Show war praktisch jeder Laternenmast mit Werbebannern behängt. Schließlich wurde die Show ja als eines der ganz großen Events der letzten Jahre hingestellt (nach Olympiade und Expo).

Nied­er­rhein... Am Ende der Braunkohlenzeit, im Pliozän, überwand der junge Rhein, aus der Mainzer Gegend kommend, zum ersten Mal das Rheinische Schiefergebirge. Mit dem Ausklingen der Braunkohlezeit schwand auch im nördlichen Rheinland das subtropische Klima. Zu dieser Zeit suchte der Rhein mit der Ur-Maas den Weg zum Meer und lagerte die ältesten Diluvialschotter in Form von wasserhellen und milchigen Quarzen sowie anderen Kieselgesteinen ab. ... How long people processed galena as main ore for the production of lead is unknown. As lead inter alia used as an additive to various melts (e.g. to bronze and the salt-cementation process for gold extraction) one can assume that the properties of this mineral were known before 3000 BC. Other sources speak of a history of lead about 7000-9000 years BC back.
