Dort wurde Galmei abgebaut, welches schon vor der Erfindung der Direktverhüttung von Zinkerzen die Messingherstellung ermöglichte. Die hier betrachtete Lagerstätte Altenberg kann allerdings, im Gegensatz zur benachbarten Lagerstätte Gessenich (römisch: Grasciniacum) im Stolberger Raum, nicht bis in die Römerzeit zurück verfolgt werden.
