The Franken­holz Mine – A Hid­den Chapter of In­dus­trial His­to­ryFrom early tunnel construction in the 18th century to its final closure in the 1950s, the Frankenholz Mine in Germany’s Saar region was a key site of coal mining history. With ambitious shaft projects, its own cableway connection to Bexbach, and remarkable geological features – including fossil discoveries and natural oil seepages – the mine reflects both the rise of industrial progress and the dangers of underground work. Gas explosions, water ingress, and tragic accidents shaped the lives of thousands of miners. Frankenholz remains a compelling reminder of a bygone mining era.

Min­er­al Por­trait Gale­naIt is not possible to write a chapter about the mineral galena without looking at the history of lead and silver to name two of the most important raw materials and materials of humanity. How long people processed galena as main ore for the production of lead is unknown. As lead inter alia used as an additive to various melts (e.g. to bronze and the salt-cementation process for gold extraction) one can assume that the properties of this mineral were known before 3000 BC. Other sources speak of a history of lead about 7000-9000 years BC back.

Skarn ist ein alter schwedischer Bergbaubegriff, welcher ursprünglich benutzt wurde, um jede Art silikatischer Ganggesteine oder tauber Gesteine zu beschreiben, welche mit eisenhaltigen sulfidischen Lagerstätten assoziiert waren, welche stellenweise paläoproterozoische Kalksteine im schwedischen Bergbaurevier Peterberg ersetzten. Im modernen Sprachgebrauch bedeutet Skarn Calcium-haltige Silikate jeglichen Alters. Skarne oder "Erlane" sind Gesteine, die bei der Metasomatose aus Kalk- oder Dolomitgesteinen durch Reaktion der Carbonatmineralien mit SiO2 bzw. am magmatischen Intrusivkontakt entstehen. Ge­ol­o­gische Streifzüge auf Ibiza... Ähnlich ist es um die geologischen und mineralogischen Kenntnisse Ibizas bestellt. Zwar erschienen die ersten geognostisch - geologischen Arbeiten über die Balearen bereits recht früh (VIDAL & MOLINA 1888), jedoch stammt die erste detaillierte geologische Karte erst aus dem Jahr 1935 (HAANSTRA 1935; SPIKER 1935). Diese ist mit Modifikationen auch heute noch gebräuchlich. Insgesamt betrachtet sind deutschsprachige geologische Veröffentlichungen seither erstaunlich rar geblieben, was angesichts der zahlreichen deutschen Pensionäre, die sich auf Ibiza niedergelassen haben, doch verwundert. Auch die umfangreiche Bautätigkeit der letzten Jahrzehnte, die auch ehedem unzugängliche Plätze leicht erreichbar machte und darüber hinaus hervorragende Aufschlüsse schuf, blieb bedauerlicherweise geologisch - paläontologisch weitgehend undokumentiert... Wirtschaftliche Hauptaufgabe der Grube war die Versorgung der Riedel-de Haen AG mit dem für die Flußsäureproduktion im Werk Seelze erforderlichen Säurespat.
